BROWN BEAR HUNTING IN RUSSIA

Russia – the world’s largest country – has an incredibly rich and varied fauna and flora! It’s a country with the long and unique history.

 

Russia is blessed with the largest brown bear population in the world. Brown bear is one of the most widespread, well-known and popular animal in Russia.

 

Russia visa must be obtained before arrival (depending on origin).

Hunting season

  • Siberian brown bear / Magadan: April – May, August – start of October
  • Ussuri brown bear / Sakhalin: April – start of June, August – November
  • Kamchatka brown bear / Kamchatka: May, August – November
  • Eurasian brown bear / Veliky Novgorod: April-May, August-October

Regions and hunting areas

Magadan

Region

 

Magadan oblast is located on the Coast of Okhotsk Sea – northeastern part of the Russian Federation (the Far East). It is one of the world’s rarest places for the purity of its original nature and the magical diversity of its flora and fauna. The area is mostly tundra.

In April, the temperature can vary from 0 to -20°C, and in May: from +5 to -10°C. On open sunshine – temperature will rise up more!

In September/October, the temperatures can vary from +5 to -10°C, so the hunter will need warm windproof clothes and waterproof boots of high quality.

In August, the temperature will be from +15 to -5°C.

 

Hunting area

 

Brown Bear is hunted on the cost of Okhotsk Sea. Local transfer from Magadan to hunting area by helicopter. Each way flight takes around 1 hour. During all the hunting period, stay at the main hunting camp – heated tent camp.

Sakhalin

Region

 

Sakhalin is a large Russian island in the North Pacific Ocean. It’s Russia’s largest island and is located just to the North of Japan. International flight is to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, straight after the local flight to the North of island – Okha tow OR ground transportation to the very South of Sakhalin – Crillon peninsula.

Thanks to the cold and raw Sea of Okhotsk which surrounds the island, the climate on Sakhalin is generally cool and humid.

During April/May, the temperature can vary from +5 to -10°, but during an autumn – September/October – temperature can vary from +10 to -10°.

 

Hunting areas

 

2 options for hunting are available:

  • Hunting on the North of Sakhalin – arriving at Okha Airport, after ground transfer to hunting area using off-road vehicle and motorboats. Distance from airport to hunting area is ~170 km. Area description – mountains and forests.
  • Hunting on the South of Sakhalin – arriving at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, after ground transfer to the hunting area in Crillon peninsula. Distance to hunting area ~150 km. Area description – low land and forests.

Kamchatka

Region

 

The Kamchatka peninsula is a 1 250 km long peninsula in the Russian Far East. It lies between the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Sea of Okhotsk to the west.  Volcanoes and volcanic peaks, cyclones and underground heat created here a mixture of twenty climate zones and a great variety of flora and fauna. Beautiful landscape, geysers and mineral springs and many more – all that is found here in Kamchatka.

Kamchatka’s climate is as diverse as its wildlife. You will find a moderate maritime zone on either coast, a continental zone in the central valley with four distinct seasons, and an arctic zone in the northern parts of the peninsula. Depending on when and where you choose to travel on the peninsula, you will find a tremendous variance in temperature. The beauty of traveling to Kamchatka is that all of these climatic zones are easily accessible.

During a spring time temperature can vary from +5 to -10 degrees average; August from +5 to +15°C; September/November from +10 to -15°C.

 

Hunting areas

 

4 different locations for hunting are available:

  • Northern part of Kamchatka – Palana. After arrival to Kamchatka-Petropavlovsk local flight to Palana town. Hunting area is located ~60 km from town, where you get by off-road vehicle.
  • Central part of Kamchatka – close to the Bay of Kamchatka. After arrival to Kamchatka-Petropavlovsk 7 hour ground transportation to Anavgay town, it’s located to the North of Kamchatka-Petropavlovsk. From Anavgay 1 hour transfer by helicopter to hunting area.
  • Southern part of Kamchatka – Ust-Bolshereck. Ground transportation from Kamchatka-Petropavlovsk to hunting area.

Altitude is various, from lower land at Bear and Moose hunt to mountainous area at Snow Sheep hunt. Sheep is hunted at the altitude of 1100-1800 meters.

Veliky Novgorod

Region

 

Novgorod oblast is situated in the European part of Russia. After international flight to St. Petersburg, 3h ground transportation to the South of Novgorod oblast. Novgorod has humid continental climate with severe winters, warm summers and strong seasonality. The area is mainly covered by forests and fields.

During an April, the average daytime temperature is from +5 to +15°C, night time +5 to -5°C. August/September daytime from +10 to +20, night time from -2 to +10°C.

 

Hunting areas

 

Hunting areas are just around the town of Veliky Novgorod. Each morning transportation to hunting areas by 4×4 vehicle. There are several places, where hunting is organized, but all are situated up to 100 km from town.

Accommodation

Magadan

Accommodation is in the heated tents, which are based in the main camp. Service staff and cook services available as well. Hunter with professional guide leaves main hunting camp for the period until the trophy is taken! Accommodation on mountains is provided in tents.

Sakhalin

During a hunting period, accommodation mainly is provided in hunting lodges. Well-equipped hunting lodges with Russian sauna – service staff and cook services.

Kamchatka

Accommodation mainly is provided at small wooden cabins, lodges or heated tent camps, which are equipped with dining area, water, generator, etc. In some cases it’s necessary to stay up on mountains for few days.

Veliky Novgorod

During a hunt stay in small hotels with all necessary needs.

Hunting conditions

Magadan

Very often motorboats are used as the main transport during a hunt. During an early spring time Brown Bear hunting with snowmobiles, later spring time – with motorboats and by stalking.

Sakhalin

Hunting can be organized in several ways; in a very early spring, hunting will be organized with snowmobiles. Later in a spring time – motorboats and stalking on foot. During an autumn hunting – motorboats are used for transportation and spot and stalk. Apart of hunting possible to organize great salmon fishing!

Kamchatka

If combined hunting, then more days must be taken. During a snowy period we use snowmobiles for transportation on hunt. When there is no snow – hunting on foot or with horses from main hunting camp.

Veliky Novgorod

Brown Bear hunting is organized by 2 methods – from high seat (tower) and stalking. Early fall hunts are done from stands along oat and barley fields. Spring hunts are organized with bait.
